Ultravox! – Japanese mini LP sleeve CDs

Ultravox! - Japanese mini LP sleeve CDs

The three original Ultravox! studio albums have been given the Japanese mini LP sleeve CD edition makeover. (A pity that they did not also include the ‘Three Into One’ compilation too… that would have been perfect.) Over the next few posts I’ll be showing each one in detail so you can see all the additional pieces that come with each CD.

Gary Numan / Tubeway Army - Japanese mini LP sleeve CDs

Small but perfectly formed… the ever delightful phenomena that are Japanese mini LP sleeve reproduction CDs. An expensive addiction these things. Over the next few posts I’ll be sharing the four different Numan ones that have been released to date as well as examining the three Ultravox! ones as well, so you can see the level of detail to the original issues that are present for these editions.

For the record, the four Numan ones released to date are;

  1. ‘Tubeway Army’
  2. ‘The Pleasure Principle’
  3. ‘Telekon’
  4. ‘I, Assassin’

I don’t know why there have not been any further Numan releases in this series or if there are even any further plans for them.

British Electric Foundation ‘Music for listening to’ US CD (Caroline, CAROL 1124-2)

Related to the previous post, this is a CD release from 1997 that features all of the tracks originally issued on the UK ‘Music for Stowaways’ cassette as well as the ‘Music for listening to’ vinyl mini-album.

The front cover design is based on the vinyl LP sleeve and preserves its tracklisting, the back case displays the listing as found on the CD. Continue reading “British Electric Foundation ‘Music for listening to’ US CD (Caroline, CAROL 1124-2)”

British Electric Foundation ‘Music for Stowaways’ UK cassette (Virgin, TCV2888, Released: 1981)

Originally a cassette-only album release, the first following the departure of Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware from the original Human League line-up. 1980/81 saw the cassette as a format very much in-vogue, with other acts such as Bow Wow Wow making much publicity from cassette-only releases such as ‘Your Cassette Pet’.

BEF ‘Music for Stowaways’ UK cassette

This was all no doubt fuelled by the revolution that was the Sony Walkman, first introduced in 1979. The title of ‘Music for Stowaways’ came from Sony’s originally planned UK name for the device, the Stowaway, but what would eventually be the Walkman. Hard Corps ‘To Breathe’ West German 12″ (Polydor/Metronome, 883-413-1), 1985

To this day I still don’t know what the story is behind this single and why it was never properly released, seemingly withdrawn at the last minute back in late 1985 – no doubt why it is extremely difficult to come by.
